The portrait by Virgil Finlay is based on the portrait of a man in red chalk (circa 1510) in the Biblioteca Reale, Turin. It is thought that Leonardo da Vinci drew this self-portrait at about the age of 60.

The drawing by Virgil Finlay also depicts a human figure flying as a bird. This was based on a drawing by Leonardo da Vinci around 1490.

Evidently, Virgil Finlay mirrored the original drawing by Leonardo da Vinci for a better composition in his illustration.

The illustration by Virgil Finlay was also use a design for a stamp.
