Detail Charles Macklin as Shylock |

The scene depicts Charles Macklin and Mrs Pope as Shylock and Portia in the 'Trial' scene from 'The Merchant of Venice'. It is an engraving by William Nutter (1790?) after the painting by John Boyne. Ahead of his time, Charles Macklin wears a costume appropriate to the time and place of his character, whereas the other actors wear contemporary garments.
