by Virgil Finlay

Virgil Finlay's illustration for "Tcheriapin" by Sax Rohmer in Famous Fantastic Mysteries, July 1951, seems to be modelled after a photo of Alexander Tcherepnin.

Alexander Tcherepnin (1899 - 1977) a Russian composer noted for the "experimental" nature of his work. Although Tcherepnin maintained a home in Paris for more than half a century and was resident in the United States for much of his last thirty years, his background and culture were Russian.

"Tcheriapin" is part of "Tales of Chinatown", a collection of ten stories published in 1922.
