Differences in Editions of 'The Book of Virgil Finlay'
Between 1975 an 1981 Gerry de la Ree published a series of seven books containing art and short essays on Virgil Finlay. The first book in the series, 'The Book of Virgil Finlay, Being the Drawings of Virgil Finlay (1914-1971) from the collection of Gerry de la Ree, was also published in a softcover edition by Flare / Avon Books.
Below the differences are outlined between the Gerry de la Ree edition of 1975, and the Flare / Avon Books edition of 1976, First Flare Printing, October 1976.
- The Gerry de la Ree edition appeared in hardcover only, with cover wrappers, and in one printing. The Flare / Avon Books edition appeared as softcover only.
In the essay 'The legend Grows' (The Third Book of Virgil Finlay, 1979), Gerry de la Ree remarks that the hardcover edition was reprinted as a trade paperback by Avon in 1976 that had gone through three printings. No mention is made of the differences outlined below.
- The Gerry de la Ree edition is limited to 1050 numbered copies. The Flare / Avon Books edition is not numbered and the number of copies is not known.
- The front cover illustrations are different.

- The drawing 'Deer (five studies)' that appears on page 9 of the Gerry de la Ree edition is not present in the Flare / Avon Books edition.
- The drawing 'Purity - a linoleum cut' that appears on page 10 of the Gerry de la Ree edition, appears on page 9 in the Flare / Avon Books edition.
- The drawing 'Design of a Dream's Desertion' that appears on page 10 of the Flare / Avon Books edition is not present in the Gerry de la Ree edition.
- The colofon by Stefen E. Fabian on page 128 of the Gerry de la Ree edition is not present in the Flare / Avon Books edition.
In the Flare / Avon Books edition page 128 is blank.
- The back cover illustrations are different.
